About The Black Star Archive

History

History

History

The Black Star Line Shipping company began as a part of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1919. A fleet of ships was purchased for the purpose of providing employment opportunities to Black seafarers, facilitating trade among the African diaspora, and promoting agency. It was a symbol of Pan-Africanism and the strength of the African Diaspora across the seas.
